WORTHWHILE WEDNESDAY

worthwhile

The Webster’s dictionary defines worthwhile as “being worth the time or effort spent <worthwhile preparations.” Those who are consciously aware realize that everything we do causes an effect. They carefully plan their actions to ensure the best possible outcome from their behavior is achieved. They ensure their actions have a valuable meaning and purpose that contributes to the growth, happiness and wellness of others around them.

Worthwhile endeavors involve a trade of energy (time, skills, talents and abilities), toward an objective or a contribution of resources (money or objects) that gives supportive resources to the work of others to create their objective outcomes. Examples of worthwhile: 1) The money is for a worthwhile cause. 2) Seeing my children’s joy made building the tree house all worthwhile.3) Is it worthwhile to try to fix my computer?

I am grateful that my Dad taught me the value of work and relationships. He wouldn’t let me get away with taking the lazy way out and doing half jobs or call work complete that was less than satisfactory. He held high standards in quality and workmanship and told me “anything worth doing is worth doing right. If you want the best than give it your best and keep practising until it gets better.” I hated his philosophy when I was a kid and wanted to go play instead. It wasn’t until I got older that I really understood what those words meant when I started learning the consequences of my own actions and how much time and money got wasted and opportunities missed by doing things mediocre.

The second lesson my Dad taught me was the importance of good character in my dealings with other people. He recognized the value in people and was very devoted to giving his time and skills to help support family, friends and neighbors. He always stressed the importance of team work and that we need others in order to survive in this world and to treat everyone with fairness, honesty and respect so they would be there when the time came that we needed them.

People who succeed in life take the time to evaluate multiple possible outcomes before they make a decision and then go with the choice that will bring the most good. They save a lot of time and resources by stopping to think situations all the way through and because they get better results this way, they tend to be happier, have more available resources and create better things for themselves and others around them.

For those of you who took advantage of the free gift I offered last week and got a copy of your “Dream Builder Strategy Plan,” take a look at what you wrote down and think of ways you could make the results even better.  Often times we sell ourselves short on the “worthiness” obstacle and settle for less than what we really can do/be/have simply because we lack confidence in our own knowledge and abilities to produce better results or doing things in a different way than our normal habits, routines and comfort zones.

If you want better things in your life then you have to learn and you have to work for it. There is no other way around this. One way to make this easier is by changing your attitude about the learning or the work. A joyful attitude always makes the work easier and focusing on the end result keeps reminded you that you are going through this and there is a better result at the end of the process.
